Full list of words from this list:

  1. contraindicate
suggest that something (e.g., a treatment) is inadvisable
Name the conditions that contraindicate hair removal in the salon.
Some medical conditions (such as lupus) and medications (such as antidepressants or cortisones) may cause thinning of the skin or make the skin more vulnerable to injury. Waxing clients with these conditions could cause unnecessary inflammation or severe injuries to the skin.
  2. removal
the act of taking out or causing to leave
Although permanent hair removal services are not often offered in salons, it is useful to know the options that exist. Permanent hair removal methods include electrolysis, photoepilation (light-based hair removal), and laser hair removal.
Electrolysis is the removal of hair by means of an electric current that destroys the growth cells of the hair. The current is applied with a very fine, needle-shaped electrode that is inserted into each hair follicle. This technique must only be performed by a licensed electrologist.
  3. arch
    form a curve
Eyebrow arching is often done as part of a professional makeup service. Correctly shaped eyebrows have a strong, positive impact on the overall attractiveness of the face. The natural arch of the eyebrow follows the orbital bone, or the curved line of the eye socket, but hair can grow both above and below the natural line.
Tweezers are commonly used to remove and shape eyebrow hairs, and can also be used to remove undesirable hairs from around the mouth and chin.
  4. superfluous
more than is needed, desired, or required
A depilatory is a substance, usually a caustic alkali preparation, used for the temporary removal of superfluous hair by dissolving it at the skin’s surface.
A depilatory contains detergents to strip the sebum from the hair and adhesives to hold the chemicals to the hair shaft for the five to ten minutes necessary to remove the hair. During the application time, the hair expands and the disulfide bonds break. Finally, such chemicals as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, thioglycolic acid, or calcium thioglycolate destroy the disulfide bonds. These chemicals turn the hair into a soft, jelly-like mass that can be scraped from the skin.
  5. wax
substance solid at normal temperature and insoluble in water
Wax is a commonly used epilator and is available in two main forms: hard and soft wax. Both types of wax are made primarily of resins and polymers, but can also be made from sugars, honey, and sometimes beeswax.
An epilator removes the hair from the bottom of the follicle. This means the hair would take longer (4-6 weeks) to grow back. For more sensitive skin types, wax can be substituted with a thick, sugar-based paste. Another advantage of sugaring is that it can be used on hairs that are 0.3 centimeters long.
  6. thread
remove facial hair by tying a fine string around it
Threading, also known as banding, is a temporary hair removal method whereby cotton thread is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin, entwining the hair in the thread and lifting it from the follicle.
  7. magnify
    make large
A magnifying lamp is a magnifying lens surrounded by a circular light, providing a well-lit, enlarged view of the skin. Magnifying lamps, also sometimes called loupes or mag lights, are used for skin analysis, close inspection of unusual lesions on the skin, extraction of comedones, and hair removal including tweezing, electrolysis, and waxing.
  8. hereditary
occurring among members of a family usually by heredity
Skin type is hereditary and cannot be permanently changed with treatments, although the skin may look considerably better after treatment.
  9. pore
any small opening in the skin or outer surface of an animal
The first thing you should look for is the presence or absence of visible pores (follicles). The amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands determines the size of the pores and is hereditary. Obvious pores indicate oily skin areas, and lack of visible pores indicates dry skin.
  10. dehydrate
    lose water or moisture
Dehydrated skin may be flaky or dry looking, with small, fine lines and wrinkles. It may look like it has a piece of cellophane on top of it. Dehydrated skin also may feel itchy or tight.
The technical term for dehydrated or dry is alipidic (lack of lipids). Alipidic skin becomes dehydrated because it does not produce enough sebum to prevent the evaporation of cell moisture.
  11. clog
fill to excess so that function is impaired
Acne is a disorder in which the hair follicles become clogged, resulting in infection of the follicle with redness and inflammation.
When follicles are blocked with solidified sebum and dead cell buildup, oxygen cannot readily get to the bottom of the follicle where acne bacteria live. The lack of oxygen and access to a food source such as a blocked follicle filled with sebum cause acne bacteria to multiply quickly, eventually causing a break in the follicle wall.
  12. damage
the occurrence of a change for the worse
Sun-damaged skin will have many areas of hyperpigmentation, lots of wrinkled areas including areas not in the normal facial expression, and sagging skin from damage to the elastic fibers.
  13. surface
the outer boundary of an artifact or a material layer
Cleansers are designed to clean the surface of the skin and to remove makeup.
Cleansing milks are non-foaming, lotion cleansers designed to cleanse dry and sensitive skin types and to remove makeup. Foaming cleansers are cleansers containing surfactants (detergents) that cause the product to foam and rinse off easily.
  14. astringent
a drug that causes contraction of body tissues and canals
Toners, also known as fresheners or astringents, are lotions that help rebalance the pH and remove remnants of cleanser from the skin.
  15. excess
more than is needed, desired, or required
Exfoliants are products that help bring about exfoliation, the removal of excess dead cells from the skin surface.
Proper exfoliation may improve the appearance of the skin in the following ways:
•Reduces clogged pores and skin oiliness
    •Promotes skin smoothness
    •Increases moisture content and hydration
•Reduces hyperpigmentation (dark blotches of color)
    •Decreases uneven skin color
•Eliminates or softens wrinkles and fine lines
    •Increases elasticity
  16. scrub
the act of cleaning a surface by rubbing it with a brush
Gommages, also known as roll-off masks, are peeling creams that are rubbed off of the skin, and microdermabrasion scrubs, scrubs that contain aluminum oxide crystals, along with other granular scrubs, are examples of mechanical exfoliants.
  17. dissolve
become or cause to become soft or liquid
Chemical exfoliants are products that contain chemicals that either loosen or dissolve dead cell buildup.
Enzyme peels, also known as keratolytic enzymes or protein-dissolving agents, are a type of chemical exfoliant that works by dissolving keratin protein in the surface cells of the skin. Usually, enzyme products are made using plant-extracted enzymes from papaya (resulting in an enzyme known as papain) or pineapple (resulting in an enzyme known as bromelain), or they are made from an enzyme derived from beef by-products (resulting in an enzyme known as pancreatin).
  18. emollient
a substance with a soothing effect when applied to the skin
Moisturizers help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are basically mixtures of humectants, also known as hydrators or water-binding agents, which are ingredients that attract water and emollients, which are oily or fatty ingredients that prevent moisture from leaving the skin.
Look for daily moisturizers that contain broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect against both UVA and UVB light, helping to prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
  19. beneficial
    promoting or enhancing well-being
Masks, also known as masques, are concentrated treatment products often composed of mineral clays, moisturizing agents, skin softeners, aromatherapy oils, botanical extracts, and other beneficial ingredients to cleanse, exfoliate, tighten, tone, hydrate, and nourish the skin.
  20. gauze
a net of transparent fabric with a loose open weave
Masks that have a tendency to run can be applied over a layer of gauze. The gauze holds the mask on the face, while allowing the ingredients to seep through to benefit the skin.
  21. manipulation
touching with the hands or by use of mechanical means
The impact of a massage treatment depends on the amount of pressure, the direction of movement, and the duration of each type of manipulation involved.
Effleurage is a light, continuous stroking movement applied in a slow, rhythmic manner with the fingers or the palms. Petrissage is a kneading movement performed by lifting, squeezing, and pressing the tissue with a light, firm pressure. Fulling is a form of petrissage in which the tissue is grasped, gently lifted, and spread out.
  22. friction
effort expended in moving one object over another
Friction is a deep rubbing movement in which you apply pressure on the skin with your fingers or palm while moving it over an underlying structure. Friction has been known to have a significant benefit on the circulation and glandular activity of the skin. Circular friction movements are typically used on the scalp, arms, and hands. Light circular friction is used on the face and neck.
Chucking is grasping the flesh firmly in one hand and moving the hand up and down along the bone while the other hand keeps the arm or leg in a steady position. Rolling is pressing and twisting the tissues with a fast back-and-forth movement. Wringing is a vigorous movement in which the hands, placed a little distance apart on both sides of the client’s arm or leg and working downward, apply a twisting motion against the bones in the opposite direction.
  23. percussion
tapping a part of the body for diagnostic purposes
Tapotement, also known as percussion, consists of short, quick tapping, slapping, and hacking movements.
Tapotement movements tone the muscles and impart a healthy glow to the area being massaged. This form of massage is the most stimulating and should be applied with care and discretion. In facial massage, use only light finger tapping. Hacking and slapping movements are used only to massage the back, shoulders, and arms.
  24. vibration
    a shaky motion
Vibration is a rapid shaking of the body part while the balls of the fingertips are pressed firmly on the point of application.
The following benefits may be obtained by proper facial and scalp massage:
•Skin and all structures are nourished
•Skin becomes softer and more pliable
    •Circulation of blood is increased
•Activity of skin glands is stimulated
•Muscle fibers are stimulated and strengthened
    •Nerves are soothed and rested
    •Pain is sometimes relieved
  25. accumulation
an increase by natural growth or addition
Steam also helps to relax and soften follicle accumulations such as comedones and clogged follicles, making them easier to extract.
Most steamers work by having a heating coil that boils water. The steam from the boiling water flows through a pipe that can be focused on the area to be treated, normally the face. Only distilled water should be used in most steamers to avoid mineral buildup in the machine. Steam is usually administered at the beginning of the facial treatment, because it can help to soften tissues and make it more accepting of moisturizers and other treatment products.
  26. buffer
a cushion-like device that reduces shock due to an impact
A fairly thick layer of cleanser or moisturizer should be applied to the face before using the brushing machine. This applied product provides a buffer for the brushes so that they do not scratch the face, which they might do if the face were completely dry.
A brushing machine is a rotating electric appliance with
interchangeable brushes that can be attached to the rotating head. Brushes of various sizes as well as textures are common. Larger and stiffer brushes are used for back treatment, and smaller and softer brushes are used for the face.
  27. process
a particular course of action intended to achieve a result
Desincrustation is the process of softening and emulsifying hardened sebum stuck in the hair follicles.
During desincrustation, galvanic current is used to force an alkaline fluid or gel deeper into the follicle in order to loosen the sebum. Another process that uses galvanic current is iontophoresis, which enables water-soluble products that contain ions to penetrate the skin.
  28. vacuum
clean with a home appliance that cleans by suction
Microdermabrasion uses a closed vacuum to shoot crystals onto the skin, bumping off cell buildup that is then vacuumed up by suction.
  29. facial
care for the front of the head, involving cleansing
Facial treatments fall into one of the following categories:
•Preservative. Maintains the health of the facial skin by cleansing correctly, increasing circulation, relaxing the nerves, and activating the skin glands and metabolism through massage.
•Corrective. Correct certain facial skin conditions, such as dryness, oiliness, comedones, aging lines, and minor conditions of acne.
  30. essential
    basic and fundamental
The use of essential oils such as lemon verbena, lavender, and rose is a frequent practice in facial skin care. Many essential oils are also used for aromatherapy, the therapeutic use of plant aromas for beauty and health treatment.
  31. foundation
the basis on which something is grounded
Foundation, also known as base makeup, is a flesh-toned cosmetic used to minimize the appearance of skin imperfections.
Concealers contain a high concentration of pigment and provide greater coverage than foundation. They are used to hide dark eye circles, hyperpigmentation, distended capillaries, and other imperfections. There should be no obvious line of demarcation where foundation or concealer begins and ends.
  32. adhere
    stick to firmly
Pressed powder is blended with binding agents such as zinc stearate to help it adhere to the skin.
Pressed powder is most commonly reserved as the final layer of powder and is perfect for touch-ups. Loose powder is used to set the foundation, making it easier to apply other powders, such as blush or bronzer. Face powder is often reapplied throughout the day to absorb excess sebum and reduce the shine of oily skin.
  33. cosmetic
a toiletry designed to beautify the body
Eye shadows are cosmetics used to accentuate the eye shape and complement eye color.
Available in cream as well as pressed and loose powder forms, eye shadows come in almost every color of the rainbow, from warm to cool, neutral to bright, and light to dark. They also come in a variety of finishes, including metallic, matte, frost, or shimmer.
  34. define
show the form or outline of
An eyeliner is a cosmetic used to define the eyes and make the lash line appear fuller.
Eyeliner pencils consist of a wax (paraffin) or hardened oil base (petrolatum) with a variety of additives to create color; they are available in both soft and hard forms for use on the upper and lower eyelids. Eyebrow pencils and eyebrow powders are used to darken the eyebrows, correct their shape, or fill in sparse areas.
  35. blush
a rosy color taken as a sign of good health
Cheek color, also known as blush, is used primarily to add color to the cheeks.
Never apply blush in a solid circle on the apple of the cheek, beyond the corner of the eye, or blended inward between the cheekbone and the nose. Sweeping blush just below the cheekbones will result in a more chiseled, sophisticated look. For more definition and a warm glow, bronzer can be used.
  36. gloss
the property of being smooth and shiny
Lip color, also known as lipstick or lip gloss, is a waxy cosmetic used to
    enhance the lips.
Lip liner is generally applied before the lip color to define the shape of the lips and keep color from bleeding.
  37. mimic
    imitate, especially for satirical effect
The most popular mascara colors mimic eyelash color in shades of brown and black.
Mascara is a cosmetic preparation used to darken, define, and thicken the eyelashes. It is a polymer product that is formulated with water, wax, thickeners, film formers, and preservatives. The pigments most commonly used in mascara are carbon black and iron oxides.
  38. efficacy
capacity or power to produce a desired result
A makeup brush is divided into three parts: the hair, the ferrule, and the handle. Each part affects the quality, efficacy, and lifespan of the brush.
•Hair is the term used for the bristles of makeup brushes.
•Ferrule is the metal part that holds the brush intact and supports the strength of the bristles. Look for double crimping, or a ring, around the ferrule to ensure the handle won’t loosen.
•The handle comes in a wide range of lengths and can be made of wood, acrylic, plastic, or metal.
  39. disposable
designed to be thrown away after use
Single-use implements are disposable and should be discarded after one use. These supplies offer clean application every time and prevent the spread of infection.
Single-use implements include sponges (to apply foundation, powder, or creams), sponge-tipped shadow applicators, powder puffs, mascara wands, spatulas (to remove makeup from containers), or cotton swabs and pads.
  40. determine
reach, make, or come to a decision about something
When determining skin color, you must first decide if the skin is fair, medium, or deep. Then determine whether the tone of the skin is warm or cool.
•Warm colors range from yellow and gold to orange, red-orange, most reds, and even some yellow-greens.
•Cool colors encompass blues, greens, violets, and blue-reds.
A neutral skin tone contains equal elements of warm and cool, no matter how fair or deep the skin is.
