  1. enhancement
an improvement that makes something more agreeable
A term used to encompass a broad range of specialty areas, including hairstyling, nail technology, and esthetics is cosmetology, also described as appearance enhancement. Cosmetology is defined as the art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails, and hair and includes the study of cosmetics and their application.
  2. aesthetic
a philosophical theory as to what is beautiful
Adorning the head with elaborate hairstyles was and still is considered a sacred place in the African aesthetic.
  3. lavish
    characterized by extravagance and profusion
Queen Nefertiti (circa 1400 BC) stained her nails red by dipping her fingertips in henna, wore lavish makeup designs, and used custom-blended essential oils as signature scents.
  4. aristocrat
    a member of the nobility
History also shows that during the Shang Dynasty (circa 1600 BC), Chinese aristocrats rubbed a tinted mixture of gum arabic, gelatin, beeswax, and egg whites onto their nails to color them crimson or ebony.
  5. vermilion
a vivid red to reddish-orange color
Greek women applied preparations of white lead onto their faces, kohl around their eyes, and vermillion upon their cheeks and lips.
  6. popular
regarded with great favor or approval by the general public
Roman women lavishly used fragrances and cosmetics. Facials made of milk and bread or fine wine were popular.
  7. distillation
purifying a liquid by boiling it and condensing its vapors
Around AD 1000, a Persian physician and alchemist named Avicenna refined the process of steam distillation. This ushered in the modern era of steam-distilled essential oils that we use today.
  8. expanse
a wide and open space or area, as of land, sea, or sky
During the Renaissance, shaving or tweezing of the eyebrows and hairline to show a greater expanse of the forehead was thought to make women appear more intelligent.
  9. induce
    cause to arise
Victorian women are said to have pinched their cheeks and bitten their lips to induce natural color rather than use cosmetics, such as rouge or lip color.
  10. standard
the ideal in terms of which something can be judged
In the early twentieth century, the invention of motion pictures coincided with an abrupt shift in American attitudes. As viewers saw pictures of celebrities with flawless complexions, beautiful hairstyles, and manicured nails, standards of feminine beauty began to change.
  11. specialize
become more focused on an area of activity or field of study
Now cosmetologists frequently specialize either in haircolor, texture, or in haircutting; estheticians specialize in esthetic or medical-aesthetic services; and nail technicians either offer a full array of services or specialize in artificial nail enhancements, natural nail care, or even pedicures.
In addition to specializing in services for hair, nails, and skin, cosmetologists can become distributor sales consultants (they provide information about new products, trends, and techniques), salon trainers, artistic directors, or film, theatrical, or editorial stylists.
  12. recession
a situation in which the state of the economy declines
While many factors, including the national economy, affect the industry, the salon business usually withstands recessions much better than other industries.
  13. creative
having the ability or power to invent or make something
The salon is a creative workplace where individuals are expected to exercise artistic talent.
Creativity means having a talent such as painting, acting, cutting hair, applying makeup, or doing artificial nails. Creativity is also an unlimited inner resource of ideas and solutions. To enhance your creativity, keep these guidelines in mind: be positive, look around for inspiration, and surround yourself with others who share your passion.
  14. interaction
mutual or reciprocal dealings or influence
Beauty professionals work with many different types of clients, and having good life skills can help keep those interactions positive in any situation.
Some of the most important life skills are:
•Being helpful and caring to others.
    •Making good friends.
    •Feeling good about oneself.
    •Having a sense of humor.
    •Maintaining a cooperative attitude.
•Approaching work with a strong sense of responsibility.
    •Being consistent in your work.
    •Adapting successfully to different situations.
•Sticking to a goal and seeing a job through to completion.
•Mastering techniques to become more organized.
    •Developing sound decision-making skills.
  15. productive
having the ability to create or originate
Stay productive. There are three bad habits that can keep you from maintaining peak performance: (1) procrastination, (2) perfectionism, and (3) lack of a game plan. You will see an almost instant improvement in your productivity when you eliminate these troublesome tendencies.
    1. Procrastination is putting off until tomorrow what you can do today.
    2. Perfectionism is an unhealthy compulsion to do things perfectly. Someone who never makes a mistake may not be taking the necessary risks for growth and improvement.
    3. Lacking a game plan means not consciously planning your life. While an overall game plan is usually organized into large blocks of time (five or ten years), it is just as important to set daily, monthly, and yearly goals.
  16. feasible
capable of being done with means at hand
Remember to set feasible goals, to create a plan of action, and to revisit the plan often.
Here are some action steps for achieving your goal:
    •Build self-esteem.
    •Visualize success.
    •Build on your strengths.
•Be kind to yourself, and stay true to yourself.
    •Practice new behaviors.
•Keep your personal life separate from your work.
  17. effective
producing or capable of producing an intended result
Here are some of the most effective ways to manage time:
•Learn to prioritize by ordering tasks on your to-do list from most important to least important.
•When designing your time management system, make sure it will work for you. For example, if you are a person who needs a fair amount of flexibility, schedule some blocks of unstructured time.
•Never take on more than you can handle. Learn to say “no” firmly but kindly, and mean it.
    •Learn problem-solving techniques.
•Give yourself some downtime whenever you are frustrated, overwhelmed, worried, or as a treat for work well done.
•Have a notepad or organizer accessible at all times.
•Make daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
  18. investment
the commitment of something other than money to a project
Remember that every effort you make to follow through on your education is an investment in your future.
  19. integrity
    moral soundness
Maintain your integrity by aligning your behavior and actions to your values.
For example, if you believe it is unethical to increase your sales by recommending products that clients don’t really need, then do not engage in that behavior.
  20. confidentiality
    discretion in keeping secret information
Do not share your personal issues with clients. Likewise, never breach confidentiality by repeating personal information that clients have shared with you.
Do not engage in an attempt to fulfill the role of counselor, career guide, parental sounding board, or motivational coach for any of your clients.
  21. conscious
having awareness of surroundings and sensations and thoughts
Also, be conscious of your nonverbal communication, which is just as important as verbal communication.
  22. ethical
    adhering to moral principles
Practice ethical behavior in the salon by employing these five professional actions:
    1. Providing skilled and competent services.
    2. Being honest, courteous, and sincere.
    3. Avoiding sharing clients’ private matters with others—even your closest friends.
    4. Participating in continuing education and staying on track with new information, techniques, and skills.
    5. Giving clients accurate information about treatments and products.
  23. tact
    consideration in dealing with others
Diplomacy—also known as tact—is the ability to deliver truthful, even sometimes critical or difficult, messages in a kind way.
  24. tone
the quality of a person's voice
The tone of your voice is a personality trait, but if your natural voice is harsh or if you tend to mumble, you can consciously improve by speaking more softly or more clearly.
  25. image
the general impression that something presents to the public
Making a positive impact is essential when working in the business of image building. Beauty professionals are often held to higher image standards by clients because they view beauty professionals as image experts.
Remember, you are a walking billboard! Also, a positive attitude is one of the foundational principles in developing a professional image.
  26. imperative
    requiring attention or action
As a beauty professional it is imperative to always be clean, neat, and have a pleasant scent.
  27. posture
the arrangement of the body and its limbs
Your physical presentation involves your posture and the way you walk and move. Good posture conveys an image of confidence, and can prevent fatigue and many other physical problems.
  28. ergonomics
the use of life sciences to study workers and their environments
Ergonomics is the science of designing the workplace as well as its equipment and tools to make specific body movements more
    comfortable, efficient, and safe.
For example, a hydraulic chair can be raised or lowered to accommodate stylists of different heights, allowing each stylist to service clients without bending over too far. Certain shears are designed to eliminate hand fatigue when cutting hair because repetitive movements are of particular concern.
  29. attentive
    taking heed
Be attentive. Each client is different. Some clients are clear about what they want, some are demanding, and still others may be hesitant.
  30. terminology
a system of words used to name things in a discipline
Communicate professionally by using the proper terminology and thoroughly explaining the features and benefits of the products and services.
  31. questionnaire
a form with a set of queries to gain statistical information
The client intake form is used in beauty and wellness services as a questionnaire that discloses the client’s contact information, products they use, hair/nail/skin care needs, preferences, and lifestyle. The form also includes all medications, both topical (applied to the skin) and oral (taken by mouth), along with any known medical issues, skin or scalp disorders, or allergies that might affect services.
  32. document
    record in detail
Allergies or sensitivities must also be noted, highlighted, and documented on the service record card—the client’s permanent progress record of services received, results, formulations, and products used during the service or purchased.
  33. consultation
a meeting to discuss a particular question or topic
The client consultation is the communication with a client that determines the client’s needs and how to achieve the desired results. The consultation is one of the most important parts of any service and should always be done before starting the actual service.
Be well prepared to make the most of this dialogue:
•Have a variety of styling books and/or digital images that your clients can look through.
•Show a variety of style options including various lengths, haircuts, and haircolor.
•A swatch book or swatch ring is a great tool for discussing haircolor options. If the swatch is long enough, it can be held up to the client's face or integrated into his or her own hair to see how it looks.
  34. assessment
the act of judging a person or situation or event
Perform a needs assessment. Discover what the client wants and what they need.
  35. preference
    a strong liking
Determine and rate the client’s preferences.
Keep in mind that many times, clients desire a specific cut or color that he or she may have seen on a friend or celebrity. If the desired look cannot be achieved, create a plan, offer alternative looks, and set future styling goals.
  36. reflective
capable of physically throwing back light or sound
Listening to the client and then repeating, in your own words, what you think the client is telling you is known as reflective listening. It is important to focus on the client and not interrupt while he or she is speaking. After the client is finished, restate and confirm what was said.
  37. recommendation
something that is suggested as advisable
Once you have enough information, ask the client if you may make some recommendations.
Base your recommendations on the following criteria:
    •Lifestyle
    •Hair type
    •Face shape
  38. maintenance
activity involved in keeping something in good working order
Discuss upkeep and maintenance. Counsel every client on the salon maintenance, lifestyle limitations (blond hair and chlorine, for instance, are not a good match), and at-home maintenance that he or she will need to commit to in order to look their best.
  39. tardy
after the expected or usual time
Tardy clients can greatly affect the salon flow. Because beauty professionals depend on appointments and scheduling to maximize working hours, a client who is overly late for an appointment, or one who is habitually late, causes problems.
Know and abide by the salon’s appointment policy. Many salons set a limit on the amount of time they allow a client to be late before requiring them to reschedule.
  40. constructive
tending to improve or promote development
Be open to constructive criticism. It is never easy to hear that you need improvement in any area, but keep in mind that part of your manager’s job is to help you achieve professional goals and ensure the salon’s success. It is the manager’s job to evaluate your skills and offer suggestions on how to improve and expand those skills.
