Lament, assonance, terra cotta. These are just a few of the 4.6 million words learners mastered in Vocabulary.com's Spring 2025 Vocabulary Bowl, the world's largest academic contest. But it's not just about racking up points—it's about the thrill of competition, the satisfaction of real progress and the reading and writing skills that last long after the season ends. This spring, more than 380,000 learners and 30,000 teachers from 109 countries joined the action, proving that words have the power to connect and inspire.
Chapelle Chipmunks win third Vocabulary Bowl in school’s history
METAIRIE, LA. — They’ve got a way with words and these Louisiana ladies like to learn.
As WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood says, you’re also about to learn that they are the champions.
They dig deep into the dictionary. That’s how they study, and that’s how they became the winners of the Vocabulary Bowl.
“Vocabulary is very important because it helps you know the meaning of the word and articulate exactly what you’re trying to say.”
Buckingham claims vocabulary title yet again
For Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy teacher Ryan Price, the Vocabulary Bowl is an opportunity to help his students further their understanding of the English language. It’s also a great opportunity to win.
This year, the English classes at Vacaville’s charter high school once again claimed first place in the national competition put on by Vocabulary.com.
The students “grind on it for months and months and months to win it, and I think coming away with the championship and having something to show for it is really beneficial for them,” said Price.
Billings middle school wins first place in Montana in a worldwide competition
BILLINGS —Ben Steele Middle School in Billings secured a victory in the recent Vocabulary.com Vocabulary Bowl.
More than 300,000 learners and 30,000 teachers across 109 countries joined the action. Ben Steele mastered 6,568 words to win in the Montana contest, which ended at the end of March.
“It's great for any content area, because vocabulary is going to be part of any type of class, whether it's math, health, P.E., science. You're going to have vocabulary for everything,” Trudell added.
Plainville High School no. 1 in Connecticut in Vocabulary Bowl contest
Plainville High School earned the top spot in Connecticut in Vocabulary.com’s Spring 2025 Vocabulary Bowl.
Plainville High School, which has been participating in the national vocabulary competition since 2019, emerged as the #1 high school in Connecticut and ranked #172 nationwide.
The top three learners from the Spring 2025 bowl in Plainville were Richard Incognito, Matthew Fantozzi, and Jasmine Labarda.
“In particular, with our top learners, it proves they’re going beyond what they need to do just for English class,” said Emily Wasley, PHS English Department Instructional Leader.
Crossville Middle wins national Vocabulary Bowl
Crossville Middle School placed first among Alabama elementary and middle schools in a national vocabulary bowl after showing their mastery of more than 7,700 words.
The Vocabulary Bowl is an eight-week biannual virtual competition hosted by Vocabulary.com. Any student from any school around the world could compete.
Each student had their own account and was able to earn points for their school by answering questions on word definition, synonyms, and antonyms, and being able to provide a photo describing that word.
Brooklyn's James Madison High School Stands Out in Global Vocabulary Bowl
Brooklyn’s James Madison High School earned the top spot in New York’s High School division, placing them in the top 5% of competitors globally.
The Vocabulary Bowl, hosted biannually by Vocabulary.com, challenges students to build their word knowledge through an adaptive, online platform. Rather than competing in person, students earn points for their school by demonstrating mastery of individual words, each correct answer inching them closer to a stronger vocabulary and a higher score.

Word wizards at Enosburg Falls Middle School win Vermont Vocabulary Bowl
ENOSBURG FALLS – The Enosburg Falls Hornets remain victorious in vocabulary, topping word-mastery for the state.
For the third season in a row, Enosburg Falls Middle School have been crowned the victor in the Vocabulary Bowl for Vermont. The school's first place victory saw them master 1,156 more words over second place, Craftsbury Academy in Orleans County, for a total score of 4,503 points.
In order to achieve a superb school score, students are required to master as many words as they can. Every word mastered, earns the student and school a single point, and the most points win.

MLCA emerged from the fall Vocabulary Bowl with some impressive honors: first place in Washington, second place in the U.S. and Canada in the under-500-students division and fourth place in North America overall.
"The school that beat us (in the division) had four times the number of students we did," said English teacher Hannah Pease, who coached the Lions wordslingers to victory.
East Central Middle School Places First in the State in Vocabulary Contest
(St. Leon, Ind.) – East Central Middle School has been recognized as one of the top performing schools in a wide-ranging academic competition.
The bi-annual Vocabulary Bowl is open to accredited public and private K-12 schools, teachers at accredited public and private schools, and learners.
Eligible learners go online to Vocabulary.com during the contest period to master as many words as they can through the activities on the website. The goal is to be the school with the most mastered words.

Learning Tree Elementary Students Place First in State Vocabulary Bowl
The results are in, and Learning Tree Elementary School in Dalton, Ga. are the Spring 2024 Vocabulary Bowl champions! As rookie participants, this tiny army of 34 kids in grades 5-8 showcased their vocabulary and literacy skills by collectively mastering 16,506 words, earning them the titles of Georgia state champions and middle/elementary school Division III runner-up.
In the Vocabulary Bowl, students across the United States and Canada compete biannually for two months to master the most words. Division III consists of schools with 500 students or less. The winning school had 482 students, compared to the 34 students from Learning Tree Elementary.
Westview students claim top spot in Vocab Bowl in Colorado
Westview Middle School uses Vocabulary.com to enhance its students' vocabulary. The school is automatically entered into a contest that measures how often students and teachers use it in addition to regular coursework. Westview students noticed they were just points behind four area high schools, including Boulder High and made a push for the top spot this spring.
Every student at Westview Middle participated in the contest because every teacher uses lists on the site to enhance student learning, said Karen Clancy-Cribby, language arts teacher.
DAHS takes first place in 2024 Vocabulary Bowl
DuBois Area High School was crowned the Division II High School Champion and Pennsylvania State Champion in the Spring 2024 Vocabulary Bowl for the first time.
Mastering 27,371 words, the Beavers jumped up leaderboards this season and placed them first among all Division II high schools in the country, according to a press release issued by vocabulary.com.
Minto School students are best in Alaska for Vocabulary Bowl
For the second year in a row, Minto School students have outperformed other Alaska schools in the Vocabulary Bowl — a nationwide competition organized by vocabulary.com. The Minto students mastered a whopping 1,400 vocabulary words.
The competition is held in the spring and summer each year. Minto also performed best in Alaska during the fall 2023 competition.
MCMS students win second consecutive national Vocabulary Bowl
Morehead City Middle School (MCMS), for the second consecutive time, has claimed the top national spot in its division in the Spring 2024 Vocabulary Bowl.
The spring competition drew more than 160,000 students from 1,800 schools.
According to a Vocabulary Bowl press release, MCMS students mastered 26,591 words, placing them first in Division III Middle School and 15th overall in the United States.
Saint Mary's Ryken Retains Title in Vocabulary Competition
