/ˈtaɪni haʊs/
IPA guide

Other forms: tiny houses

A deliberately small dwelling, usually 400 square feet or smaller, is a tiny house. People who choose to live in tiny houses often want to live simply and economically.

Some tiny houses have wheels, so they can be moved to different places. Others are built in suburban backyards, as extra space for grandparents or friends. Many people move into tiny houses, which are often just scaled-down regular houses, with bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, to simplify their lives. They also make ideal homes for people who have experienced homelessness. The tiny house movement started in the 1970s as a reaction to the rapidly growing size of U.S. homes.
