Other forms: tare weights
Tare weight is the weight of an empty container or transport vehicle. If you put 70 pounds of ice cream into an empty truck, and then find that the truck weighs 1,070 pounds, the tare weight of that truck is 1,000 pounds.
At the grocery store, the tare weight is the weight of the packaging alone, without any goods inside. If you fill a plastic container with potato salad, the weight of the container is subtracted from the per-ounce amount you pay at checkout. In the shipping industry, containers often have their tare weight painted on the door, making it easy to determine the cargo weight by subtracting the tare weight from the total weight on the scale.
