rough draft

/ˈrʌf ˈdræft/
IPA guide

Other forms: rough drafts

A rough draft is the first, unpolished version of a written work. In a rough draft of your English essay, you'll get your initial thoughts down, but they may not be fully fleshed out, and spelling and grammar may not be perfect.

Some people never do a rough draft. They write the whole thing just once, perhaps correcting a few, minor typos, and then hand it in. But that doesn’t give them as much opportunity to let the ideas percolate and develop, and to figure out how best to organize and express those ideas in a coherent, easy-to-follow way. Some people will continue to revise and rewrite even after the initial attempt. A rough draft is Step One!
