road trip

/roʊd trɪp/
IPA guide

Other forms: road trips; road tripping; road tripped

A long, recreational voyage in a car is a road trip. When you take a road trip, you can stop along the way and visit spectacular national parks and quirky local attractions.

Some may think bus or train travel counts as a road trip, but the classic definition is a fun, leisurely drive of many miles in an automobile. Road trip was first used around 1950 to describe baseball teams traveling to away games. But people took road trips long before that, since cars were able to travel long distances. If you're visiting a far-away friend and have time to spare (and a reliable car), consider a road trip!
