pedestrianized

/pəˈdɛstriəˌnaɪzd/
IPA guide

A pedestrianized area has been changed to make it safer or easier for people to walk to places. A pedestrianized city block may forbid cars on the streets around it.

Pedestrianized neighborhoods may ban automobiles, or they may just have an abundance of safe crosswalks, speed bumps to slow cars down, and wide sidewalks to accommodate pedestrians — walkers. There may be walkable plazas, sidewalk cafes, and plenty of space for strolling without the hindrance of navigating amongst vehicles. There is a social component to pedestrianized places, as people can more safely gather and mingle in abundant, car-free green spaces. The word pedestrianized comes from the Latin pedester, "on foot."
