paternity leave

/pəˈtɜrnɪti liv/
IPA guide

Other forms: paternity leaves

When a new father gets time off from his job, it's called paternity leave. Taking paternity leave is good for dads and their babies!

Paternity leave and maternity leave — often referred to by the gender-neutral term parental leave — are employee benefits, along with things like paid sick leave and vacation time. Not every worker is able to take paternity leave, which is unfortunate because one-on-one time between a dad and a new baby helps them bond. Paternity leave is from the Latin paternus, "of a father," and the root pater, "father."
