Other forms: money pits
A money pit is something that requires a never-ending and exorbitant amount of money to maintain. That old car you bought for a few hundred dollars may prove to be a money pit if you have to constantly pay for expensive repairs.
Picture a bottomless hole that you keep throwing money into. That's the image suggested by the term money pit. Besides concrete items like vehicles, houses, and boats, almost anything can be a money pit: You might hear someone grumble, "I don't know why the government keeps pouring funds into that program — it's nothing but a money pit." Expensive hobbies, business ventures, and streaming music and TV subscriptions can be money pits, too, especially if you're trying to grow your savings.
