mana

/ˈmɑnɑ/
IPA guide

In Polynesian, Melanesian, and Māori cultures, mana is a type of spiritual or supernatural energy or power. The term is also used in video games, where mana is a refillable, magical resource.

The concept of mana exists in multiple indigenous cultures of the Pacific Islands. In some cultures, a leader with great mana is someone believed to have the favor of the gods or ancestors. Mana can be found in people, animals, objects, nature, and locations. It is something that can be gained through deeds, wisdom, and success, but it can be lost as well. The term was borrowed for use in fantasy fiction and then in video games, where mana is like magical fuel that can be regenerated.
