madrasa

/məˈdræsə/
IPA guide

Other forms: madrasas

A religious Islamic school is called a madrasa. Kids from the local madrasa might meet their public school friends to play basketball in the afternoon.

Although today a madrasa can refer to any religious school attended by Muslims, originally it was only used for colleges or universities. The Arabic madrasah literally means "a place of study," and refers to any school at all, whether religious or secular. It traces back to the root darasa, "he read repeatedly" or "he studied."
