IPA guide

Other forms: generative AIs

When a machine is trained to create brand new images, videos, or written text, that's generative AI. If you've ever chatted with a chatbot online, you've experienced one thing that generative AI can do.

Generative AI is used for entertainment — you can ask a chatbot to write a poem in the style of Dr. Seuss or create an image of your cat making a pizza. The technology also has real-world uses like diagnosing diseases and customer service. Many people have concerns about generative AI reinforcing biases and creating fake news. Generative describes the way these models work, generating new data based on what they've learned, and AI stands for "artificial intelligence."
