exfoliator

/ɛksˈfoʊliˌeɪdər/
IPA guide

Other forms: exfoliators

An exfoliator is a tool or cosmetic product used to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Some people use an exfoliator as a regular part of their skincare routines.

An exfoliator is supposed to uncover a brighter, more glowing complexion by removing those dead skin cells that can clog pores and make your skin look dull. Mechanical exfoliators, like handheld electronic brushes, coarse sponges or mitts — or even scrubs containing coarse ground nuts, salt, or sugar grains — use friction to slough off the dead cells. Chemical exfoliators contain acids or enzymes that dissolve the bonds between the dead cells, allowing them to be shed more easily.
