IPA guide

Other forms: cherry blossoms

A cherry blossom is the flower that will eventually become the small, round stone fruit. Some types of cherry blossoms are valued just for their beauty, not for their fruit.

A cherry blossoms can, of course, be used for the flower of the cherry tree itself, but it's also common to use the term to refer to a pink color that's similar to the flowers: "We've got a cherry blossom silk fabric that would be beautiful for your dress." In English, cherry blossoms often refers to the flowers of cherry trees that are grown only for their beautiful flowers. In Japanese, cherry blossoms are called sakura.
