A borzoi is a large, lean dog with a distinctively long snout and a silky coat. Borzois resemble long-haired greyhounds.
Originally known in English as the Russian wolfhound, the borzoi was first bred centuries ago by Russian nobility to hunt wolves. Its long, slender face and soft, flowing coat belie this fierce history, as does its typical temperament, sometimes described as "cat-like." While highly athletic and easily bored by obedience training, the breed is remarkably affectionate, quiet, and gentle. Borzoi comes from an archaic Russian word, borzoy, which means "swift."
