Other forms: Denalis
Denali, also called "Mount McKinley," is a mountain in south central Alaska. At 20,300 feet, Denali is the highest North American mountain peak.
The name Denali, used for centuries by Native Alaskans, comes from a Koyukon word meaning "the high one." In 1896, the peak was renamed Mount McKinley in honor of William McKinley, who went on to become the 25th U.S. president. In 1975, Alaska began petitioning to change the name back to Denali, which the federal government did in 2015. Though Mount McKinley again became its official name in 2025, many continue to refer to the mountain as Denali.
