In a piece for Politico, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives Steve LaTourette cited the Vocabulary.com blurb for grifter when he used the term to describe an arm of the Republican party.

Politics aside, we're always glad to see rich words like grifter making it into the public spotlight. Our blurb for the word makes great use of some of others — as apparently we're all storing up some fairly rich language to use against the swindlers who take us for our money.

Another way to define grifter? Perhaps Eddie Jones' conman in the 1990 film The Grifters puts it best: "A grifter's got an irresistible urge to be the guy who's wise."
