Whether your school is remote, hybrid, or in-person, a Vocabulary Jam is a great way to bring everyone together for some friendly competition. It's also one of those rare activities that's energizing and educational!

The Jam is a vocabulary game where teams compete in real-time to see who can answer the most questions correctly. In just a few minutes, you can set up a Jam that will get everyone excited about word learning and asking to play another round. It's one of the ways that Vocabulary.com has gamified word learning, and it's a great way to engage and motivate students.

Watch the energy when students Jam.

Here's why students and teachers love the Jam:

  • It's an engaging activity with real educational value
  • It works in any setting: remote, hybrid, or in-person
  • It's an incentive  for learners to complete their Vocabulary.com homework
  • It works with a small group, any number of classes, a whole school, or even an entire district
  • It's a fun way to review before a Vocabulary.com custom quiz

Here's how it works:

  1. Start with any  list on Vocabulary.com. Search our vast list library for a ready-made resource, or create your own list.
  2. Click "Start a Jam!"  Look for the "Start a Jam" button in the "Activities" section of any list.
  3. Customize your Jam. Choose how many teams, how many questions, the difficulty level, the speed of the game, and more!
  4. Invite some players. To invite players, just share the unique 6-digit Jam code. They'll simply enter the code at www.vocab.com/jam, and then it's game on! Hosts can also play by clicking the "Join as Player" button at the top.
  5. Start the Jam! When you're ready to begin, click "Start the Jam." A 5-second countdown alerts players that the game is about to start, and then the first question will appear.
  6. Answer quickly — but be careful! The faster you answer, the more points your team earns if you guess correctly, but the more points you lose if you get the question wrong. There's no penalty for skipping a question.
  7. Rematch! Once everyone gets a taste of the action, they'll want to play again. Just click the "Rematch" button to automatically create a new Jam with the same vocabulary list, players, and teams.

See for yourself!

Jam FAQs

Q: Who can start a Jam?
A: Anyone!
Whether you're an educator or a student, anyone with an account on Vocabulary.com can start a Jam. If you have a premium subscription, you can customize your Jam by selecting the words and questions, and you can schedule your Jam up to two weeks in advance.

Q: What if I want my Jam to be untimed?
A: No problem!
Simply choose the "untimed" option when creating a Jam.

Q: Do players earn points from participating in the Jam?

A: Yes! All players who complete a Jam are awarded the points they earn as they play.

Q: Are the words I get wrong during the Jam added to my Personal Learning Program?
A: No.
Because of the timed and competitive nature of the Jam, Vocabulary.com doesn't consider any words you got wrong to be "trouble words," so the system doesn't automatically add them to your Learning Program. However, at the end of each Jam you can manually add any of those incorrect words, and then we'll teach them to you when you're playing The Challenge.

Q: Do I need an account to join a Jam?
A: Nope!
You can join anonymously. Just be aware that if you play anonymously, you won't be able to keep your points!

Q: As the host, can I move people to different teams?
A: Yes!
Simply click on the person's name at the bottom and select "Switch to X Team" to switch them to a different team.

Q: How many people can join a Jam?
A: How many people do you know?
There's no player limit. The more, the merrier!
