The Bowl is back (and better!) this season with exciting new changes. We are making the Vocabulary Bowl even more fun and competitive for everyone. Find out how your school can participate in the largest academic competition!

What is the Vocabulary Bowl?

The Vocabulary Bowl is a competition for everyone! This biannual academic competition motivates students to build vocabulary, improve literacy skills, experience academic success, and have fun doing it.

Compete and win together

The Bowl is designed to be an academic competition where every student can be part of the team. Nobody is cut from the competition. Instead, their work is cumulative, so they stay motivated in their word learning during the entire season. With school-wide awards, students can be proud of their collaborative efforts and celebrate their achievements together.

Personalized learning at any level

Vocabulary.com has crafted a smart, award-winning adaptive engine that provides personalized learning. Everyone works on vocabulary words and activities adjusted to their own vocabulary proficiency and focused on closing their individual word gaps. The Vocabulary Bowl encourages all learners to not only climb the ranks but also boost their vocabulary levels at the same time, regardless of their current proficiency!

A fun way to build vocabulary

Our gamified approach encourages learners to gain points and propel their school up the leaderboards while building their word learning! The Vocabulary Bowl adds an extra level of friendly competition against other schools while building teamwork amongst peers as they work collaboratively to top the leaderboards.

Watch your word mastery propel your school up the brand new leaderboards! When the competition officially starts on October 1st, schools can track their progress toward word domination on new and improved leaderboards.

Get in the game

All schools and classrooms with an active license will be automatically registered for the Vocabulary Bowl. There is no registration deadline which means you can purchase a license anytime to join the competition. Take advantage of the registration period to make sure you have an active license set up for the competition period so your school can start racking up points on day one!

Tons of trophies, bundles of banners

We’re stepping up the competition with two seasons–Fall and Spring. Teachers can keep students motivated as they sprint to the top of the leaderboards for a shorter duration and more schools can fairly join the competition mid-year. There’s a lot to celebrate with double the awards as we’ll give out trophies, swag, and certificates twice throughout the school year!

How to participate in the Bowl

Any K-12 accredited schools in the U.S. and Canada with an active site or classroom license will be automatically registered when the Vocabulary Bowl season starts. Schools and classrooms can purchase a license at any time during the contest period to join in on the fun. If you’re not already signed up, we recommend starting a license during the registration period so your class can start earning points on the first day of the competition.

Teacher checklist

Get ready for the Vocabulary Bowl using this teacher checklist so that you’re at the starting line for this sprint to the top of leaderboards on October 1!

Correct school name: This one is very important! All classes must display the correct school name to ensure you earn points for the correct school.

To check your school, choose My Account from the hamburger menu. Click the Edit button next to My Profile. Confirm or enter the correct school in Your School and save changes.
When setting up classes, this school in your profile will be selected as the default. You can check the school associated with current classes by selecting My classes from the hamburger menu.

Active classes: Make sure you have active classes for the duration of the Vocabulary Bowl season, October 1, 2023 - November 30, 2023! Create classes before the Vocabulary Bowl starts so your class is set up for success.

Add students: Make sure all your students are rostered in your active classes! Only points from rostered students will count. Add students so you can monitor activity, keep track of performance, and set class goals together!
