We’re excited to announce our first ever Spring Vocabulary Bowl! Expect even more fun and competition in this spring sprint for word learning.

The Vocabulary Bowl is a biannual academic competition that motivates all learners to build vocabulary, improve literacy skills, and experience academic success. Schools and teachers whose students master the most words February 1 - March 31, 2024 earn bragging rights and awards!

Every point counts

As students complete activities on Vocabulary.com, they answer multiple questions on each word until they demonstrate mastery. Each word they master counts as a point for their school. The competition motivates students to demonstrate a true understanding of each word they’re learning rather than stopping at memorizing a single definition.

Everyone makes the cut

The Vocabulary Bowl allows everyone to compete and contribute to their school’s win. Every student can be part of the team, mastering words through adaptive learning that adjusts to their own vocabulary proficiency. Students and schools aren’t cut from the competition. Instead, their work is cumulative, propelling them up the leaderboards throughout the entire competition so they stay motivated in their word learning during the entire season.

Everyone wins as a team

Every student’s efforts contribute to their school and class total, encouraging cooperation and building their academic community. With school-wide awards, students can be proud of their collaborative efforts and celebrate their achievements together.

While students work collaboratively to win, the competition is fierce! Over 4 million students in 46,900 schools have competed in the Vocabulary Bowl and we’re adding new ways to track success and win!

New for the Spring 2024 season

More opportunities to compete…and win!

This season, we’re making it easier for individual teachers and those new to Vocabulary.com to earn awards and bragging rights! We’re celebrating educators who motivate students in their classes to be vocabulary victors. With the addition of top teacher prizes, teachers whose students earn the most points are also recognized. Whether your entire school is competing or you’re an individual teacher looking to motivate your classes, there are many ways to win.

Level up with new leaderboards

When the competition starts on February 1, 2024, both schools and teachers can track their progress toward word domination on new and improved leaderboards.

Our new Teacher Leaderboards celebrate the top middle school and high school teachers. Schools and teachers that have had a license with Vocabulary.com for less than three years will have a Rookie designation so they can see if they’re in the running for our new Rookie awards.

How to participate in the Vocabulary Bowl

All K-12 accredited schools in the U.S. and Canada with an active site or classroom license will be automatically registered when the Vocabulary Bowl season starts. Schools and teachers can purchase a license anytime during the contest period to join in on the fun. If you’re not already signed up, we recommend starting a license during the registration period (now through January 31) to start earning points on the first day of the competition.
