The Etiwanda Eagles soared to unprecedented heights in September.
E-High's students mastered more words in one month than any other school in the history of the competition. The defending North American Champions mastered 100,655 words in just 30 days, breaking their own previous record of 97,225 words mastered in September of 2018. With their latest win, Etiwanda receives yet another Vocabulary Bowl Champions Banner, bringing their haul to a record-setting 19 pennants.
Congratulations to all the hardworking students and teachers at Etiwanda High School for their outstanding achievement.
September Top 10
September is always an exciting month for Bowl fans as schools everywhere amp up the word-learning in anticipation of the Vocabulary Bowl season, which just kicked off on October 1. Lots of familiar names from last year's competition top the leaderboards, like Etiwanda, 2018-2019 High School Runner-Up Walnut Hills, and Middle School Runner-Up McAuliffe. But what really gets everyone's attention is seeing the rookie schools rising in the ranks — the names that have never been on our radar before and appear to be ready to make their move in the upcoming season. Two schools that we haven't seen playing at this level before are Mater Dei High School and Ontario High School, both hailing from California.
Here's a look at which schools cracked the top ten on the Overall Words Mastered leaderboard in September:
New Award: Two Monthly Champions Banners Up for Grabs
We've always awarded a monthly champions banner to the school that mastered the most words, but we've been so blown away by the incredible effort that students across the map have shown over the past year that we wanted to find another way to recognize their achievements. So starting in October of 2019, we're going to award two monthly champions banners — one to the top high school and one to the top middle/elementary school. The monthly high school and middle/elementary school winners will also receive achievement medals to award to their top five students.
Get Your School Involved
The Vocabulary Bowl leaderboards are structured so that schools of every size can compete at the county, state and national level on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. In addition to awarding monthly champions banners to the top high school and the top middle school year-round, we also award banners to Division and State winners at the end of the academic season. This year's competition starts on October 1st, so now is the perfect time to learn more about getting your students signed up to play, compete and learn in the Vocabulary Bowl.
