"Identity"

The identity of the poet is Julio Noboa Polanco, a native New Yorker whose focus is on Latino heritage, history, and education. But in the poem, his identity is compared to that of "a tall, ugly weed" and a high-flying eagle.

  1. harness
    keep in check
    Let them be as flowers
    always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.
  2. waver
move in a rising and falling pattern
I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
    wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
  3. expose
abandon by leaving out in the open air
To have broken through the surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness

unusually great in size or amount or extent or scope
    of the vast, eternal sky
  5. bizarre
conspicuously or grossly unconventional or unusual
beyond the mountains of time or into the abyss of the bizarre
  6. shun
avoid and stay away from deliberately
I'd rather be unseen, and if
    then shunned by everyone

a grouping of a number of similar things
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,
growing in clusters in the fertile valley
  8. praise
    express approval of
where they're praised, handled, and plucked
    by greedy human hands
  9. musty
covered with or smelling of mold
I'd rather smell of musty, green stench
  10. fragrant
    pleasant-smelling
    than of sweet, fragrant lilac
