    What pestilence or war or evil deed of the Enemy had so blasted all that region even Aragorn could not tell.

    On the other side the meads had become rolling downs of withered grass amidst a land of fen and tussock.
  13. shoal
    a stretch of shallow water
    ‘Paddle! Or we shall be driven on the shoals.’
  14. fleeting
    lasting for a markedly brief time
    Even Boromir bowed his head as the boats whirled by, frail and fleeting as little leaves, under the enduring shadow of the sentinels of Númenor.

    a large indefinite number
    And Ethir Anduin he saw, the mighty delta of the River, and myriads of sea-birds whirling like a white dust in the sun, and beneath them a green and silver sea, rippling in endless lines.
