    the visual property of something that shines
    The water in Chamber 3 is littered with abandoned equipment, and the surface swirls with the sheen of gasoline.
  2. enlightenment
    the beatitude that transcends the cycle of reincarnation
    He became the Buddha when he reached enlightenment, or a deep understanding of life and the universe. He passed that understanding on through his teachings, which show people how to live good lives.
  3. ingenuity
    the property of showing inventiveness and skill

    Correct manners infuse everyday life, even in the simple act of saying hello.
  5. impulsive

    Someone who can’t have a cool heart is viewed as immature and impulsive. When you lose your cool, people lose respect for you.

    It now takes about two hours to slog there on foot from the cave mouth, clambering over slippery, unstable boulders and wading through waist-deep water.
  7. schlep
    pull along heavily, like a heavy load against a resistance
    It also means they can have help schlepping in their gear.
  8. porous
    able to absorb fluids
    Geologists at Tham Luang have explained that as the streams run across the top of the mountain, some of the water they carry sinks down into porous limestone underneath.
  9. divert
    send on a course different from the planned or intended one
    They call these barriers diversion structures because they divert water away so it won’t enter the cave.
  10. aback
    by surprise
    Adul is taken aback. The faces bobbing above the water aren’t Thai; they belong to two white men.
  11. harrowing
    causing extreme distress
    As they dip back down below the water, Rick and John refocus on the harrowing dive ahead of them.
  12. emaciated
    very thin, especially from disease or hunger or cold
    The dive through the cave was even more difficult than they predicted, and the boys they saw were so emaciated—like walking skeletons.
  13. futile
    producing no result or effect
    The search for alternate entrances has so far proved futile.
  14. feasible
    capable of being done with means at hand
    But even now that the rescuers know where the Wild Boars are, drilling is still not feasible.
  15. composure
    steadiness of mind under stress
    “Really strong composure,” diver Jason Mallinson marveled later. “Real mental strength from them, which was surprising considering their ages.”
