    With all my strength, I push the creature back into the river, and it writhes and cries out in the terrible wail of the damned.

    “Magical trade is all about the technicalities,” he says, shaking his head.

    The thing I love about Nova is that he lets things drop. Rishi would poke and prod until I told her everything that was on my mind.

    It’s a symbiotic relationship, like a shark and a remora fish. Only I’m not sure which one of us is the shark or the remora just yet.

    He feigns a shot to the heart but laughs all the same.

    Feathers fall from their molting bodies, and my skin crawls when I think of the parakeet back home.

    Sharp talons dig into my shoulders. I’m pulled into the air in a hard jerk.

    Rishi is half listening, half petting tiny, green fairies that jump on branches and walk alongside us. They come in all the colors of the forest, with gossamer bodies and slick, bald heads crowned with thorns.

    The sun and moon shine an ethereal light, so everything looks overexposed.

    On the other side of the table, one of the pixies is letting Rishi touch her iridescent wings.

    Agosto waves a hand across the air and a decadent banquet appears.
