    We feel the subtle change in direction. There's a flash of light in the distance, then nothing.

    marked by balance or equilibrium and readiness for action
    The rock they hang from has them poised above the choke point, a perfect ambush.
  4. grope
    feel about uncertainly or blindly
    We grope for solid rock and lower onto our stomachs as quietly as possible.

    I failed. It makes me resent Morning and Genesis 12 even more.

    The duels will fluctuate our scores some, but in Vandemeer's best projections, I beat Loche by a few thousand points. In the worst-case scenarios, I lose by the same amount.

    Katsu’s looking out over the water warily.

    We have to divert everything to speed by that time.
  12. relent
    give in, as to influence or pressure
    There's a groan from our ship as Katsu considers me with narrowed eyes.
    "Fine," he relents.

    The crew gives their assent, and before long our engines are pumping too.
  14. flounder
    have difficulties; behave awkwardly
    Genesis 12 is floundering behind us.

    Morning watches as our boat turns too fast, heaves dangerously, and starts to tilt.

    affected or marked by low spirits
    We lose another capture-the-flag game in the afternoon, and I find myself where I was when I started the day. Losing ground to Genesis 12. The rest of the crew is dejected.

    They just stand sentry over the door scans, waiting.

    I watch the metal point wedge into thin air. The shaft reverberates and flexes from the blow.

    Genesis 12 notches another victory, and Loche's score inches up to mine.
  25. procession
    the action of a group moving ahead in regular formation
    I spot Bilal at the back of the procession.

    She's fast, already ducking a shoulder, but I knew she would and my arms are vise tight as I spin her into my grip, lock my arms, and shove off the chair.

    My crew swings left to miss a jutting rock and comes gliding free.

    "But business tomorrow," Requin chides. "Tonight, enjoy yourselves."

    It's late afternoon and my search for Bilal is just as fruitless as the night before. He either can't be found or doesn't want to be.

    Before Roathy can start forward, it coils into a giant black bird. It looks like the one Katsu conjured in those first days, but bigger and darker.
