    Mark was simultaneously revolted and terrified that he might be looking at the remains of the only girl he’d ever loved.

    How could she possibly still be alive in the midst of such madness? What was this Flare virus? What possibly could’ve possessed any person to want to spread it? Every question only increased his anguish.

    Trying to convince himself that things weren’t so bad—that he wasn’t losing it up top, that his anger and headaches weren’t going to hinder his concentration and focus and everything was going to be fine.

    She smiled, revealing a set of perfectly white teeth, but then turned it into a snarl.

    Her face was lit with madness as she shrieked, plummeting toward Mark, who couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

    Mark found that he felt no pity, no sorrow. She was past being human, had lost every ounce of sanity, and that wasn’t his fault.

    “I thought surviving was all that mattered, but I was wrong. We can’t leave these kids here.”
