"Hi, I'm Cinny Nym, Dean of Faculty at Vocabulary University."
We have created a Veterans' Day word puzzle for you to solve. You can copy this page or get a PDF copy here for your classroom or home.
In addition, we have created and detail below an "Alphalary" list of 236 Veterans' Day words.
Short History about Veterans' Day (Excerpts sourced from All About American Holidays by Mayme R. Krythe):
November 11, is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918, ending World War I, after four years of conflict.
In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson wrote in the final paragraph of his Armistice Day proclamation: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation."
The name "Armistice Day" was changed to Veterans' Day by Act of Congress on May 24, 1954.

Veterans' Day Lesson Plan Ideas:
Objectives: Teach students to appreciate the sacrifice soldiers make in the name of freedom
1 - Create a "suitcase" that includes items soldiers might need on a long trip.
What clothing creates a uniform? What special gear is necessary/included? What protection will soldiers need in hot/cold/freezing weather? How about assignments/jobs? Do they need rations? What personal items are important to remember family/friends back home? What characteristics make a good soldier, leader, officer? Why are "buddies" important?
Write a paragraph (or more?) to explain why these chosen items would be useful. This can be an individual or group activity.
Find out how to write a letter to a soldier in the military to thank him/her for their service to our country.
2 - Share ideas from the papers - oral discussion or use the white board. Have students talk about choices. Have them create a "master" list(s)!
If you have an Internet connection, do a web search for Veterans' Day to find maps and information of possible locations.
3 - Extension: Have students discuss why the military is essential to freedom and why some people do not like it? Why do you think opinions are so different?
