"Hi, I'm Cinny Nym, Dean of Faculty at Vocabulary University."

We have created a Memorial Day word puzzle for you to solve. You can copy this page or get a PDF copy here for your classroom or home.

In addition, we have created and detail below an "Alphalary" list of 236 Memorial Day words.

Short History about Memorial Day:
  • "Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. --- It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established and is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all."
    (Excerpts sourced directly from www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html)

  • "Unsurprisingly, given its origin in the American Civil War, Memorial Day is not a holiday outside the US. Because of its origins from World War I, countries of the Commonwealth, France, and Belgium, remember members of the military who died in war on or around Remembrance Day, November 11. The United States uses the same date as Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day) and honors all veterans, living and dead. In Ireland, National Day of Commemoration commemorates all Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations."

    Memorial Day Lesson Plan Ideas:
Objectives: Teach students to appreciate the sacrifice soldiers make in the name of freedom

  • 1 - Create a "suitcase" that includes items soldiers might need on a long trip.
What clothing creates a uniform? What special gear is necessary/included? What protection will soldiers need in hot/cold/freezing weather? How about assignments/jobs? Do they need rations? What personal items are important to remember family/friends back home? What characteristics make a good soldier, leader, officer? Why are "buddies" important?
Write a paragraph (or more?) to explain why these chosen items would be useful. This can be an individual or group activity.
Find out how to write a letter to a soldier in the military to thank him/her for their service to our country.
  • 2 - Share ideas from the papers - oral discussion or use the white board. Have students talk about choices. Have them create a "master" list(s)!
If you have an Internet connection, do a web search for Memorial Day ceremonies that will be in your neighborhood and find maps and information of locations.
  • 3 - Extension: Have students discuss why the military is essential to freedom and why some people do not like it? Why do you think opinions are so different?

  • Feel free to make a copy for use at home or in the classroom!
