  • Hi! I am Cinny Nym, a faculty member at Vocabulary University®.
    Have you studied the given roots and their meanings? Have you repeated unfamiliar words out loud? Tip: To learn new words, LOOK at them, LISTEN to them and then WRITE them. Have you listened to a "faculty member" read the words in a story at the "view context story" link? (Note: this AUDIO resource is available for all sesssions from #1 through #6. AUDIO will be available in future sets of words as noted.)
    Each puzzle contains a root, a definition and a part of speech for each word. The OBJECTIVE of this activity is to solve the puzzle by typing in appropriate letters in the word blanks.
  • If you have not learned the unfamiliar word(s) well enough and are unable to solve the puzzles, press the submit button. By doing this, you can study again the root, word answers and a contextual sentence. Then go back and try to solve the puzzle by typing in letters. You can solve the puzzle repeatedly until you earn a perfect score!
  • Email your answers to friends, family and classmates. The OUTCOME is your mastery of three roots and at least 12 words!

1) AB-ABS Prefix #1
Directions: Vocabulary.com offers 14 PREFIX puzzles with the grade level of each word marked to the right of the word beginning with a prefix. Use eight grade level words for each prefix, a total of 112 words.
These prefix activities include: ab -ad - be - com - de - dis - en - ex - in - pre - pro - re - sub - un
 
Clue: 1. Study the words in the word bank to determine the meaning(s) of each prefix word.
2. Use the definition, part of speech and "master" root as clues to solve each puzzle.
3. Type or write your answers INSIDE the boxes. At the bottom of the last puzzle, click " SUBMIT" to get the correct answers and a sentence for each word.
4. Note: You can print a copy of these prefix exercises in three sizes: normal, bigger or biggest font.

Why are these 14 prefixes important? According to Richard E. Hodges of the University of Puget Sound in a booklet titled: "Improving Spelling and Vocabulary in Secondary School" published by the NCTE in 1982; page 30:
"If you were to examine the 20,000 most used English words, you would find that about 5,000 of them contain prefixes and that 82% (about 4,100) of those words use one of only fourteen different prefixes out of all the available prefixes in the language."

4)  Considered apart from a particular instance or object; difficult to understand; theoretical (adjective)

5)  An ample or overflowing quantity; profusion; degree of plentifulness (noun)
Root UND = wave, flow, overflow
  
6)  An advocate for the termination of slavery in the United States (noun)
Root ADOL = increase, grow
  
 
7)  To give up sovereign power, office or responsibility usually formally; renounce (verb)
Root DICT = speak, declare
