Sui generis means "one-of-a-kind," "unique," "peculiar," "special," or "in a class of its own."
The adjective sui generis originates from Latin, meaning, literally, "of its own kind." The Titanic could be considered sui generis because of its unmatched size and opulence at the time it embarked on its maiden voyage in 1912, as well as for the sad and preventable way in which it collided into an iceberg and sank. "The Diary of a Young Girl" is a sui generis written account by a young Jewish girl named Anne Frank who chronicles her experiences hiding from Nazis during World War II.
