Columbus Day (or Week) Lesson Plan Ideas:Feel free to make a copy for use at home or in the classroom!
Objectives: Teach students to appreciate history and do a bit of problem solving.
1 - Make a "discovery suitcase" cutting out pictures or ads for items that students would need if they were going on a long sea voyage or long land trip.
Did they find food? clothing? wet-weather gear? How about jobs? Is anyone looking for work who would seem like he or she would make a good crew person?
Write a paragraph (or more?) to explain why items that choose would be useful.2 - Tape papers to the white board. Have students see what others found. Have them vote on the three lists they like best!
If you have an Internet connection, do a web search for Columbus to find a map of his travels.3 - Extension: Have students discuss why Indians probably did not like the fact that early explorers came and "claimed" the lands in North American for themselves and their European nations? Why do you think that is?
