Welcome! Vocabulary University® celebrates the annual Stock Market Game sponsored by the Security Industry Foundation for Economic Education (SIFEE) with 17 Vocons® vocabulary comic strips.
Our non-commercial stock market site combines the use of terminology appropriate to investing and visual pictures to enhance vocabulary acquisition. We have created 17 vocabulary comic strips using 17 different stock market words. They will be posted soon. In the meantime, you can make up a story, as we did below, as a creative writing exercise. Then enjoy the crossword, word find, fill-in-the-blanks and definition match vocabulary exercises.
STORY:
Deep down I know I am very competitive, thoughtful, creative and hard working. That's why the stock MARKET is so fascinating to me. I know it can FLUCTUATE wildly and there are people who think it should be REGULATED. Not me! It is a thinking person's game where you can ANALYZE the details of an ENTERPRISE and then create a PORTFOLIO of companies to own. I might choose to INVEST in Coca Cola and my friend might chose Coke's main RIVAL, Pepsico. The PERFORMANCE we get over a year will include the cash from a DIVIDEND, but it will be reduced by the COMMISSION we pay to buy the stock. If our analysis is good then we can make a PROFIT. Our profit or loss can be LEVERAGED by borrowing money but that is too scarey for me. I understand that the use of LEVERAGE is really big when you invest in COMMODITIES like soybeans or pork bellies. That is too aggressive for me. I really prefer Coke to pork and beans!
The comic strip for "STRATEGY" is the only one that is "live" at this time, but the others will be live soon. They will all be stand alone comic strips that you can copy and use in your classroom.
