39 Week Vocabulary Lesson Plan Week #4:
SAMPLE STORIES for roots GEN and GRAD/GRESS

This activity is NOT interactive. We hope you will use our "short stories" to inspire you to write your own creative samples using the 16 or more words in this week's vocabulary lesson plan. You have permission to make a hard copy for further vocabulary study at home or in the classroom.

WEEK 4: My vocabulary.com STORY words from the roots GEN and GRAD/GRESS (in alphabetical order):
  • GEN - 8 words - gender, genealogy, generation, generic, generosity, genius, genuine, regenerate
  • GRAD/GRED/GRESS - 8 words - aggressive, centigrade, congressional, degrade, degree, graduation, ingredient, progress

SHORT STORY using the root GEN = to race, kind:
Everyone noticed Randall's GENEROSITY in spending hours to compile facts. Not one to use a GENERIC certificate, he always started with the GENUINE article. He could trace a GENDER for a single GENERATION or for many! Randall was a GENIUS at being able to REGENERATE trees of GENEALOGY.

SHORT STORY using the root GRAD/GRESS = step, walk, degree:
The temperature in the CONGRESSIONAL office registered 39 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. Many people were overcome by the heat. However, one AGGRESSIVE official had a "no-quit" personality plus the INGREDIENTS to make PROGRESS on specific tasks in spite of the heat. Even if his GRADUATION up the G-pay scale would be slow and lengthy, he kept working hard everyday.

Feel free to make a copy for home or the classroom!
